Lack of communication a common cause of divorce

A recent study from Portugal has found that men are more likely to divorce because of a lack of love, whereas women find lack of communication to be a greater cause of marital breakdown, reports the Portugal News. Other reasons given included infidelity and domestic violence.

The study, which was carried out by researchers at Minho University, also found that 17% of male respondents found they were financially disadvantaged by divorce. Female respondents didn't mention the financial consequences of divorce, but 15% of them gave lack of independence as a reason for ending their marriage. This was not given as a reason by any male respondents.

According to the Portugal News, coordinator of the study, Manuel Carlos Silva, said:

“Despite the gender-related asymmetries regarding decision-making, the truth is that divorced people see separation as a relief and a way of getting out of an ‘intolerable situation.’”
