The number of elderly divorces has increased at the same time that overall divorce rates have fallen according to the latest findings.
Overall the number of people getting divorced at an older age has been rising since the 1990s while the number of those getting divorced over the age of 60 has risen by 85% from 1990 to 2012.
If current trends continue, by 2037 over 10% of all divorces in the UK will involve the elderly. According to studies the average age of people divorcing in 2011 was 44.5 for men and 42.1 for women. Second marriages are more likely to be successful than first marriages, with a 31% chance of divorce if one or both members are remarrying compared to 45% if it is both partners' first time.
34% of marriages are expected to end in divorce by the 20th wedding anniversary.
Growth in Elderly Divorce
Experts have stated that those who marry later in life make up a significant amount of those getting a divorce over 60 as they marriage felt fresh before that stage. Other reasons for divorce is those who are older wish to take up a pastime or travel but feel they are held back by their partner.
